That Other Cebuano Language-- English

This week, I make a defense of the language that I love, and that I think I have come to call my own.

"We should write in the language that wakes us up--- and keeps us awake."

The painting above is by Cebuano artist Fred Galan. I found his work in binhiartgroup.blogspot.com

"Perhaps the better advice is “Write in the language that wakes you up.” That keeps you restless, that feeds your hunger, that reminds you that you are alive. For the best writers, it’s a matter of hearing the heartbeat of one’s words: whether local or alien, Cebuano or English."

"I've always felt that having grown up in Cebu always gave one a distinct love/hate/mostly love relationship with English. I can only begin to explain why, describe how...."

--- Agree ko. Simple example: I can never defend myself in straight English. Mugawas jud ang Bisaya.

Isog man gud.

"There was something strange/wicked/wonderful about that workshop noh? hahahahaha ambot lang uy. Murag the powers of women! haha"

It's fun to be multilingual. There are so many things that are easier to express in Ilonggo than in English and other experiences that can only be encapsulated in English.

My favorite example is the Ilonggo word for "crunchy" -- I can't even spell it. ^_^

May I link you?

"To kidnap bored English from the court offices and banks and schools, and bring it to our beautiful messy rooms. To tell it our stories, whisper into its ear our dreams, and if the timing is right, and the intention is clear, then to show it our hearts and we’ll begin to write. Really really write. Without guilt."

Ang galing, Sir Larry. What you wrote was really helpful =D
